I have a bit of a question this week. About backing up your work on your computer. I've
been wanting to purchase an external hard drive to back up my work onto, since my
computer just can't handle too much and I want to have constant access to some items,
but I wasn't sure where to start. And on top of that, I've read that it's best not to trust
those completely as they can obviously lose your work as well, which would mean I'd still
have to purchase expensive dvd's to backup my work onto.
I was wondering what some of you all do to back up your work? Is this the norm, or are
there other ways entirely to do this that I'm not aware of? My computer is a few years old,
but it seems to have trouble writing onto the 4gb dvd's sometimes, which is what prompted
all of this in the first place. I'm not sure if it's the dvd drive or if my computer just has too
much on it to work properly. I haven't been able to have it serviced or anything so I'm
not sure what the problem is. Would this possibly be a virus issue?
I've tried researching the information and haven't been able to get any great answers, so
I thought I would ask here, to see what ideas people have about backing up data and
if they have any idea or tips of what might help back up my computer or what might be
So far I've been backing up everything to dvd's, but they seem to grow constantly since
I can only get the 4gb ones and they can only hold so much data. :/
Any help or tips or ideas would be extremely appreciated. Just knowing what other people
do would help.
*UPDATE: I'm not sure if anyone cares about an update, but I will share it anyway.
This weekend I went ahead and bought a 1 TB Toshiba hard drive. So far it seems to work
great. I guess we'll see in time. I have already backed up everything on it to DVD's
anyway, so if I lose it, I won't be too upset. I feel better having the extra back up though.
And my computer has so much more space now. Everything runs a little bit faster.
However, the reason for my update is to share my experience with what happened next.
Even after I cleared my computer of more space, I still couldn't write to my blank dvd's,
which has worked in the past. But it's been doing so hit and miss lately, sometimes working
and sometimes not at all. And I can write to cd's, but apparently that uses another laser,
so it wouldn't affect the dvd drive anyway? But all weekend it wouldn't save dvd's at all. I even
tried deleting my upper and lower filters as it said online that that might help, but it only
created a bigger problem. Thankfully I was able to fix it and not have an entire mental
However, after doing a bit more research and being able to get a hold of some different
brand of blank dvd's, I do believe that is part, or all, of the issue. I've been using Memorex,
which is apparently made by Ritek, which has been causing problems for some people.
They are the brand I've been using for ages and I can't figure out why they suddenly won't
work. For whatever reason, I never suspected the brand of dvd to be an issue. I've just
tried writing to Maxell dvd's and they worked so far. (I have no idea if they're made by Ritek.)
I do know that the brand I was using before had a speed up to 8x along with four smaller ones
and these new dvd's only have 4x and 3x. I'm not sure if that would create such an issue
or not. The error message kept saying my dvd was either going too fast or too slow, which
makes me think it might.
Either way, I thought I would share this here in case other people have a similar issue. It was
the entire reason I posted this to begin with and I feel so much better having some sort of
answer or part of the issue solved, at least for now. It's funny how something so simple
created such a big mess. But now I have extra back up and have hope that I can write
to dvd's again.
